Overview of the South West Victorian Heatwave Strategy
Why develop a heatwave plan?
During the heatwave of late January 2009 there were 374 additional deaths in Victoria as a result of extreme heat.
Consequently, local governments throughout Victoria, including the South West, are developing Heatwave strategies in order to protect the most vulnerable members of their communities from the impacts of extreme heat.
The key heat-health messages
- Keep the home cool
- Keep out of the heat
- Keep the body cool and hydrated
- Help others if you can
- Know what to do if you have a health problem
- Know what to do when others feel unwell

Local Government Areas responses:
The vulnerable populations addressed in the Heatwave Plans will focus initially on Council’s Home and Community Care (HACC) clients in Moyne & Corangamite.
Council’s HACC services reach a significant number of the frail, aged and disabled, who are deemed to be most at risk during a Heatwave.
